Wimbledon's Legal Legacy
Merton holds its place in history as an important place for the development of law in England. Nearly 800 years ago, King Henry III (1207-1272) came to Merton from his wedding in Canterbury and signed England’s first ever statute which established parliamentary law across England.
Despite having little in common with modern day democracy (law was determined only by the aristocracy at that time) it was an important forerunner of it and paved the way for our modern day Parliament, with its House of Lords and House of Commons.
Modern day Wimbledon bears little resemblance to those times and nowadays is famous mostly for the Wimbleton Tennis Championship.
